About Securitylab

Australian owned and run since 2012.

Securitylab has supplied security and surveillance equipment since 2012. securitylab.com.au is our Australian store: stock held in Sydney, tracked Australia Post delivery Australia-wide, and advice written for Australian networks and Australian law.

Who we are

Securitylab is run by Vimel Technology Pty Ltd, based in Rouse Hill, Sydney. We have supplied more than 20,000 customers across Australia and New Zealand, from homeowners and tradespeople to businesses and security professionals.

We are not a large company and we do not try to be one. We specialise in security and surveillance equipment and hold the stock ourselves, so the people answering your questions know the products.

Checked before it ships

Every 4G device we send out is checked on Australian networks before it leaves us. That matters because Australia no longer has a 3G network, and a good deal of equipment still sold here will not connect.

We do not install equipment. What we do is make sure what arrives works here, and help you through the setup by email if it does not behave. Most support questions turn out to be one of about six things, and we have seen all of them.

How we source

Almost every security brand in this country imports its hardware. We do too, and we would rather say so plainly than pretend otherwise.

What matters is what happens before a product reaches our catalogue. We work with a small number of hand selected manufacturers in Taiwan, China, Korea and Europe, chosen over years rather than picked on price. Products that fail in the field come off the list, which is why the range is narrower than it could be.

Written for Australia, not translated into it

Most security advice online is written for somewhere else, and the details that decide whether a product works here get lost on the way. Three examples from our own guides:

  • Australia no longer has a 3G network, so any camera or tracker sold as 3G, or as 4G with 3G fallback, will not connect anywhere in the country.
  • At the June solstice the midday sun reaches about 39 degrees above the horizon in Brisbane and only about 24 degrees in Hobart. At midday in midwinter, a solar panel mounted flat in Hobart receives only about 40 percent of the direct sun a correctly tilted one does.
  • Recording laws differ between states. Victoria, Queensland and the NT allow you to record a conversation you are part of. NSW, Tasmania and the ACT allow it only where reasonably necessary to protect your lawful interests, or where it is not shared. WA and SA need the other people's consent unless it is reasonably necessary to protect your lawful interests. Getting it wrong carries real consequences.

That is what our buying guides are for. Each one covers a category and compares models from that range side by side, rather than the three we would most like to sell.

Talk to us

If you are not sure which product fits, tell us what you are trying to solve rather than which camera you are considering. It is a faster route to the right answer, and it occasionally ends with us saying you do not need to buy anything at all.
