How to choose a Bluetooth tracker tag

A tag is not a GPS tracker

A Bluetooth tag has no SIM and no GPS of its own. It is heard by iPhones and Android phones passing nearby, and their position is reported to you as the last place the tag was seen, which is why it works well on a busy street and poorly on an empty back road. It rings when you are in the same room and warns you when it drops out of your phone's range. Every tag here works with either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, so a household on both platforms needs only one type of tag. For live location anywhere with coverage, a 4G GPS tracker is the right tool.

Pick the mount, not the tag

The tags are the same; the packs differ in what holds them. Keyring holders for keys and bags, silicone wristbands and sport loops for a child or an older relative out with the family, breakaway collars for cats, collar mounts for dogs, and screw close waterproof cases that keep a tag out of sight inside a bike frame, a toolbox or a vehicle. Most tags here are IP67 rated with about a year of battery, and most packs are pairs, so two cats, two sets of keys or two bikes are covered from day one.

Common questions

Does it work without a phone nearby?

It needs a phone running Apple Find My or Google Find Hub to pass within Bluetooth range. In a town that happens constantly; on an empty road or in a paddock it may be hours between sightings, and the map shows the last place it was seen.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. There is no SIM and no subscription. The tag uses the Apple and Google finding networks, which come with the phone.

Will it find my car if it is stolen?

It can show where the car was last seen by a passing phone, which is useful on a suburban street and much less so on a rural road. It is not live tracking, and both Apple and Google warn a person when an unknown tag is travelling with them. For live location and movement alerts, see the 4G car GPS trackers.

Is it legal to put a tracker tag on someone in Australia? Australian law

On your own keys, bags, bikes, pets and vehicles, yes, and on a child or a dependent adult you are responsible for. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory, and tracking another adult without their consent is generally not allowed. Apple and Google also alert a person when an unknown tag is moving with them, so a tag placed on someone is found quickly.
