Description

Most bug detectors stop at 6GHz. The Protect 1216i keeps going to 12GHz, with a dedicated microwave band from 3 to 12GHz on its own built-in antenna.

Three segmented bands, two OLED displays showing a live bar graph, a five second histogram and a signal signature, and 48 threshold steps for working near strong RF. Silent, audio and alarm modes. The housing is CNC milled duralumin, it weighs 265 grams, and the battery gives about six hours.

Features

  • Wideband detection: Scans 50 MHz to 12 GHz and identifies common RF sources across cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and DECT standards.
  • Three-band insight: Segmented bands with bar graph and 5-second histogram help isolate intermittent or periodic signals.
  • Signal type cues: Signature display suggests likely signal classes to speed triage during sweeps.
  • Interference handling: Adjustable alarm threshold and selective sensitivity maintain performance near strong RF.
  • Portable operation: CNC-milled duralumin housing, built-in speaker, and up to 6 h battery life for field use.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Somewhere The Ordinary Detector Has Nothing To Say

A room that reads clean on a 6GHz detector has not been checked above 6GHz. Plenty of modern links live up there.

Band 3 covers 3 to 12GHz on its own built-in microwave antenna. If a sweep with a consumer detector came back clean and you are still not satisfied, this is the difference.

An Intermittent Signal

The hardest thing to catch is a device that transmits in short bursts and sleeps in between, because a live bar graph shows nothing most of the time.

The histogram plots the last five seconds, so a burst that happened while you were looking elsewhere is still on the screen. That is what makes periodic transmitters findable.

A Site With Strong Background RF

Near a cell site, in a building with dense WiFi, or anywhere with broadcast infrastructure nearby, a fixed-threshold detector is useless.

Forty eight threshold steps and per band selectivity let you set a working level rather than turning the alarm off. Silent mode keeps the sweep discreet while the displays do the work.

How it Works

  1. Fit the two antennas for bands 1 and 2. Band 3 uses the microwave antenna built into the housing, so there is nothing to attach for it.
  2. Start in ALL BANDS to see the environment, then set the alarm threshold above the local noise using the 48 available steps.
  3. Work the space in ONE BAND mode, watching the bar graph for level and the five second histogram for bursts. The signature display suggests what class of signal you are looking at, which tells you whether to keep going.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it scan?

50MHz to 12GHz in three bands: 50 to 700MHz, 700MHz to 3GHz, and 3 to 12GHz. It identifies common sources across cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth and DECT.

What do the two displays show?

The main display carries the bar graph for live level and a five second histogram that reveals bursty or intermittent signals. The status display shows mode, band and threshold.

Can I use it near strong background RF?

Yes, that is what the 48 threshold steps and the per band selectivity are for. Set a level above the local noise rather than switching the alarm off.

How long does it run?

About six hours on the 1150mAh Li-Ion cell, recharging in about four hours over USB. It can be used while it charges, and there is a power saver mode.

Is it built for field use?

The housing is CNC milled duralumin and shock resistant, at 265 grams and 173 by 71 by 21mm with antennas. Operating range is -10 to 45 degrees Celsius.

Am I allowed to sweep a room I am staying in?

Yes. Checking a space you occupy, a hotel room, a rental, your own home, your own car, for devices recording you is your business and nobody else's. Two practical limits worth knowing. If you find something, photograph it in place before you touch it: removing a device destroys the evidence of who put it there. And a detector tells you a signal exists, not who owns it, so treat a hit as a reason to look, not as proof.
