How to choose a fishing or sports camera

Above water or below it

The sports cameras here are a pair of sunglasses or a cap with a camera built in, recording what you are looking at while your hands stay on the rod, the bars or the tools. An underwater fishing camera is a different tool: it goes down on a cable with its own lights and feeds a live picture to a screen in the boat, or is cast out on the line and syncs its footage to your phone, so you can see structure, bait and fish before you commit to a spot.

Depth, lighting and battery

For fishing cameras, cable length or the depth rating decides the water you can work and lighting decides how much you see once the light fades. For the glasses and the cap, check the water rating against what you actually do, because splash resistance on a deck and full submersion are very different ratings, and plan around the battery: the 4K sunglasses give about half an hour of continuous recording, and each listing gives the figure for its model.

Common questions

Are these action cameras?

Not the helmet and handlebar kind. The sports cameras here are sunglasses and a cap with a camera built in, for a hands free view of what you are doing, and the fishing cameras go under the water on a cable or a line.

How deep can the fishing cameras go?

Depends on cable length or the depth rating, which is listed on each product.

Do they work in murky water?

Built in lights help considerably, though very silty water limits any camera.

Is it legal to record with a camera I am wearing in Australia? Australian law

Yes, in public places and in your own dealings with people. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory: filming people where they expect privacy, such as a bathroom, a bedroom or a changing room, is not allowed, and recording private conversations you are not part of is generally not allowed either. If you wear it for work, people should know they are being recorded.
