Description

The VIM-CLOCKCAM4K3 is the clock in this range that actually records at 4K rather than only streaming it. Its specification gives 4K, 2K and 1080p at 30fps as recording modes, and a 166 degree lens to put them through.

It takes both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi for live view on Android or iOS, uses 940nm infrared for about 5 to 8 metres of night coverage, and holds up to 256GB on a microSD card. Motion detection reaches roughly 6 metres. A 1200mAh cell carries a short outage, and plugged in it records around the clock.

Features

Records at 4K, not just streams it: The specification gives 4K, 2K and 1080p at 30fps as recording modes, which is unusual in this class.
166 degree lens: One of the widest in the clock range, enough to take in a whole room from a bedside table.
Dual band WiFi: 2.4GHz for reach through walls, 5GHz for a clean link on a busy network.
940nm infrared: Night coverage of about 5 to 8 metres, recorded without adding visible light to the room.
256GB card support: Twice the storage of most clocks in the range, which matters if you record at 4K.
Continuous or motion: Around the clock on mains power, or motion triggered with an alert to your phone.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Your Own Living Room

The 166 degree lens is the reason. From one corner of a room it sees most of it, which a 90 degree camera will not.

A Child's Room in Your Own Home

Infrared to about eight metres covers a dark room. Tell anyone who works in your home that the camera is there.

Your Own Entrance or Hall

Motion detection to about six metres covers a doorway, and the alert reaches your phone rather than waiting for you to check.

Your Own Desk or Home Office

Left on mains it records continuously, and the 256GB card keeps a long history before anything is overwritten.

How it Works

Load the card: put a microSD card up to 256GB into the clock and connect it to mains power.
Pair it: join it to 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi in the app, and pick 4K, 2K or 1080p and continuous or motion recording.
Watch or review: watch live from your phone, or take the card out and review the recordings.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this one really record at 4K?

Its specification lists 4K, 2K and 1080p at 30fps as recording resolutions rather than as a live view mode, which is different from most of the clocks in this range. If you want the highest resolution actually written to the card, this is the model.

How long does it run on battery?

About 200 minutes of continuous recording on the 1200mAh cell. That is a backup rather than a way to run it unplugged, so keep it on mains for anything ongoing.

How wide is 166 degrees in practice?

Wide enough to cover a room from one corner. It is the widest lens among the clocks here, and it is the reason to choose this one for a living room rather than a hallway.

Does it need 5GHz?

No, but it can use it. On a network with a lot of devices, 5GHz is where the live view stays smooth. For range through walls, use 2.4GHz.

Can I use this to check on my children at home?

Yes, using a camera to keep an eye on your own home and children is lawful in Australia. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory, and filming people where they expect privacy, such as a bathroom or bedroom, or recording a private conversation you are not part of, is generally not allowed. If a nanny, cleaner or carer works in your home, tell them the camera is there. This is general information, not legal advice.
