Description

A single band detector tells you something is transmitting. The Protect 1207i splits the spectrum across six separate channels, each with its own ten segment bargraph, so the reading itself tells you which kind of signal you have found.

The channels cover CDMA and LTE800 from 824 to 849MHz, GSM from 880 to 920MHz, GSM DCS from 1710 to 1790MHz, WCDMA and DECT from 1920 to 2000MHz, WiFi and Bluetooth from 2400 to 2480MHz, and 3000 to 7000MHz. Two omni-directional antennas, two sensitivity levels with an attenuator, and a metallic body make it a working tool rather than a novelty, with a stated detection range of 1 to 10 m.

Features

  • Six Separate Channels: Each band gets its own bargraph, so you can see at a glance whether an emission is cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth, DECT, or in the 3 to 7GHz range, without switching modes.
  • Ten Segments Per Channel: Six bargraphs of ten segments each give the resolution to walk in on a source, because you can watch one channel rise while the others stay flat.
  • Two Sensitivity Levels And An Attenuator: Out of band attenuation of 20 to 45dB widens the working dynamic range, which is what lets you sweep inside a building full of legitimate radio activity.
  • Four Working Modes: Silent, vibration, visual and listen, so the detector suits an occupied office as readily as an empty room.
  • Dual Omni-Directional Antennas: Cover the room from any orientation, so a sweep does not depend on pointing the unit accurately at something you have not found yet.
  • Field Ready Build: A metallic enclosure, two AAA cells and 217 g in the hand, sized at 120 x 70 x 16 mm without the antennas.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

An Office With Its Own Radio Activity Everywhere

A working building already has WiFi access points, DECT handsets and everybody's phones. A single channel detector alarms constantly and tells you nothing useful.

Six channels solve that, because you can see WiFi sitting where you expect it and still notice an unexplained reading on the cellular band. Set the attenuator above the building's own level and sweep against that baseline rather than against silence.

A Vehicle Or A Meeting Room

Both are small enough to sweep thoroughly and both are places where knowing the band matters.

A tracker reporting over cellular shows on a different bargraph from a WiFi camera, which tells you what you are looking for before you start pulling trim off. Work the room or the cabin once per antenna orientation and watch which channel moves.

A Rental Property Or Hotel Room

The value here is being able to dismiss the building's own equipment quickly and concentrate on what is left.

The DECT and WiFi channels will usually show the property's own hardware. Anything appearing on the cellular channels from inside a wall, a fitting or a piece of furniture is worth investigating, which is exactly the distinction a single channel unit cannot make.

How it Works

  1. Take a baseline somewhere in the building you are confident about, and note which channels are already active. Sweeping without that reference means comparing every reading against nothing.
  2. Sweep with both antennas at a steady pace and watch which of the six bargraphs moves. The channel that responds tells you the band, and therefore what kind of device is likely behind it.
  3. Engage the attenuator as the reading climbs and close in. Reducing sensitivity shortens the distance the detector responds over, so a source that still registers with the attenuator in is within a metre or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does having six channels actually get me?

It tells you which band a signal is on, which is most of the diagnostic work. On a single channel detector every emission looks the same, so a WiFi access point and a hidden cellular transmitter produce an identical alarm. Here they land on different bargraphs, so you can dismiss the expected and concentrate on what is left.

Does it cover 5G?

Partly, and the detail matters. Australian 5G in the 3.5GHz band falls inside the 3000 to 7000MHz channel, so it registers there. Australian networks also use 700MHz for 4G and 5G, and that sits below the lowest channel at 824MHz, so a device transmitting only on 700MHz would not be picked up. If low band cellular is your specific concern, a wideband detector starting at 50MHz is the better fit.

Can it find GPS trackers in a vehicle?

It detects the cellular transmission a tracker uses to report its position, on the CDMA, LTE800 or GSM channels, within the stated 1 to 10 m range. The limitation to understand is timing rather than range, because most trackers sleep between reports. A detector with a magnetic probe finds the hardware regardless of whether it is transmitting.

What is the detection range?

1 to 10 m as specified, which depends on the transmit power of the source. Start with wider passes and then use the attenuator to close in, since a reading that survives the attenuator is much nearer than one that does not.

How long does it run and what powers it?

Two AAA (LR03) cells, giving 10 to 15 hours depending on how much of that time the bargraphs are active. Standard AAA batteries mean a spare set in the bag is all the preparation it needs.

Am I allowed to sweep for trackers and bugs?

Yes. Checking a space or a vehicle you own or occupy, your car, your home, a room you are staying in, for devices recording or following you is your business. Two practical limits are worth knowing. If you find something, photograph it where it sits before you touch it, because removing it destroys the evidence of who put it there. And a detector reports a signal, not an owner, so treat a hit as a reason to look rather than as proof of who is responsible.
