Description

A voice recorder with a second, wireless microphone you can put across the room. The specification puts the wireless link at up to 100 metres, which is what makes it useful in a hall or a workshop where a recorder in your pocket would only hear the room.

8GB of built in memory holds up to about 350 hours in the long play modes, from a 1,500mAh cell that charges in about 90 minutes. There is an LCD for setting modes, a built in speaker for playback, voice activation, file time and date stamping, and FM radio.

Features

Two microphones: Record from the main capsule, or from the small wireless microphone placed nearer the sound. The specification quotes up to 100 metres between them.
Voice activation: Recording starts when sound is detected and pauses through silence, which saves both battery and space on a long session.
Playback on the device: A built in speaker and an LCD mean you can find and check a recording where you are, without a laptop.
8GB of built in memory: Up to about 350 hours in the long play modes, with 555, 138 and 92 hour figures quoted for the three quality settings.
Time and date stamped files: Every file is stamped, which is what turns a set of recordings into a usable record of when things were said.
Charges in 90 minutes: A 1,500mAh cell charges in about an hour and a half. The wireless microphone runs about 3.5 hours per charge.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Meetings in a Big Room

From the back of a hall a pocket recorder gets the ventilation, not the speaker.

Put the wireless microphone near the front. The link is quoted at up to 100 metres, and the recorder stays with you.

Interviews and Statements

Writing while listening means you miss half of what is said.

Start the recorder, tell the other person it is running, and take the recording away with a time and date stamp on it. Playback is on the device itself through the speaker.

Dictation and Field Notes

Notes taken standing up in bad weather do not survive the trip home.

Voice activation starts capture when you speak and stops when you stop, so a day of short observations does not become one long file of silence.

How it Works

Charge and set the mode: Charge the 1,500mAh cell for about 90 minutes and use the LCD to choose long play, standard play or high quality, and to turn voice activation on or off.
Choose a microphone: Record from the built in capsule, or place the wireless microphone nearer the sound. It runs about 3.5 hours per charge and the link is quoted at up to 100 metres.
Play back or transfer: Listen through the built in speaker and pick files on the LCD, or connect to a Windows computer to copy the time and date stamped files off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far away can the wireless microphone be?

The specification and the manufacturer's own FAQ both give up to 100 metres in suitable conditions. Walls and other obstructions shorten that, so check the placement before you rely on it.

Does it record only when someone speaks?

It can. With voice activation on, recording starts when sound is detected and pauses through silence. Turn it off if you need an unbroken file with the gaps intact.

How much will 8GB hold?

The specification quotes about 555 hours in long play, 138 hours in standard play and 92 hours at the highest quality setting.

Can I listen back without a computer?

Yes. There is a built in speaker and an LCD for choosing files, so you can check a recording on the spot. A Windows computer is only needed to copy files off.

How long does the wireless microphone last?

About 3.5 hours per charge, which is the limiting factor on a long session. The recorder itself runs far longer, so plan around the microphone if you are using it.

Is it legal to record audio in Australia?

Recording your own dictation, a meeting where everyone knows it is recording, or sound in your own empty home, vehicle or site is lawful. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory: recording a conversation you are part of is allowed in some states and restricted in others, and recording a private conversation you are not part of is generally not allowed. This is general information, not legal advice.
