Description

WiFi security cameras need a network, and a remote site with no fibre, no copper line and no mains power has neither. Running a cable and power out to a shed, a gate or a compound can cost more than the cameras themselves.

This 4G router for security cameras turns one Nano SIM into a 2.4GHz WiFi network rated to 300m in open line of sight, powered by twin solar panels totalling 30W and a 30,000mAh battery. It mounts on a wall or a post with no power point anywhere near it. Cameras connect over WiFi only, as there is no Ethernet port for a cabled recorder.

Features

  • 30W across two solar panels: The twin panels charge the battery through the day, so with regular direct sun the router runs around the clock on a wall or post with nothing plugged in.
  • One data plan for several cameras: Every camera on its WiFi shares one connection and one plan. Fit a data SIM from Telstra, Optus or Vodafone. The SIM is not included, and a SIM from one of their prepaid brands may need its APN entered in the app.
  • WiFi reach up to 300m: Rated in open line of sight, enough to cover a yard or a compound from one mounting point. Walls, sheds and trees in the path cut that distance.
  • Four antennas, two 4G and two WiFi: One pair is dedicated to the mobile signal and the other to the WiFi, all mounted outside the housing where reception is strongest.
  • 30,000mAh battery inside: Stores the day of solar charge to hold the network up overnight, with a percentage display and a charge light for each panel.
  • Australian 4G bands, including Band 28: Covers the 700MHz band Telstra and Optus use for rural coverage, where the higher bands drop away first. The 3G networks have closed, and this is a 4G device with no need of them.
  • 2.4GHz WiFi, 802.11 b/g/n: The band most outdoor WiFi cameras use, and it carries further outdoors than 5GHz. There is no 5GHz band.
  • 4G LTE Cat4, up to 150Mbps: The Cat4 ceilings are 150Mbps down and 50Mbps up, and cameras mostly use the upload side. Real speed depends on your carrier and the signal where you mount it.
  • Waterproof housing: Built for year-round outdoor mounting, with the SIM slot, power switch and charging port sealed behind a rubber cover.
  • Free app and browser settings page: Check the signal and the connected devices from anywhere, rename the network, change its password, restart it or set the APN for a SIM.
  • USB-C 9V charging input: Give it a full charge from a 9V/1A adapter before it goes up, so it starts work on a full battery. The adapter and cable are not included.
  • Swivel wall bracket and fixings: Mount it on a wall or a timber post and tilt the panels north for the strongest charge, with screws and wall plugs in the box.

Applications

Building site before the power is on

Solar WiFi cameras watch the fence line and the materials compound, but there is no fibre and no temporary power yet. Fix the router to the site office wall, fit a data SIM, and the cameras and the site laptop share one connection from day one.

Farm gate and machinery shed

The gate camera sits across open paddock, within 300m of the shed in clear line of sight. With the router on the shed wall and its panels facing north, the gate camera and a shed camera send their alerts over the one SIM, and a phone in the yard joins the same WiFi.

How it Works

  1. Charge, pair and fit the SIM: Give it 4 hours of direct sun or a 9V/1A USB-C charge first, and add it in the free app by scanning the QR code on its back while it is still on the ground. Then open the rubber cover, click a Nano SIM into the slot and switch it on.
  2. Mount it 2 to 6m high: Fix the bracket to a wall or post with clear sky to the north, panels tilted at about 40 degrees, the two 4G antennas on the left and the two WiFi antennas on the right.
  3. Join the cameras: Connect each WiFi camera to the router network, then use the free app to rename the network, set its password and check the 4G signal remotely.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do security cameras need WiFi?

WiFi cameras do, and on a site with no fibre or broadband line this router supplies that WiFi from one Nano SIM, so several cameras share one data plan. 4G cameras carry their own SIM instead, which means a separate plan for each camera. Check that your cameras connect on 2.4GHz.

Can I connect an NVR or a wired camera by cable?

No. The router has no Ethernet or LAN port, so it connects devices over WiFi only. It suits WiFi security cameras that record to their own memory card or to the cloud. A recorder that needs a network cable needs a router with a LAN port instead.

How far will the WiFi reach my cameras?

Up to 300m in open line of sight, which is the rated maximum. Walls, sheds, hills and trees between the router and a camera shorten it, and the WiFi radio in each camera limits the link too. Mount the router 2 to 6m high with a clear view of the cameras.

Which SIM card does it need?

A standard Nano SIM with a data plan, which is not included. The router covers the Australian 4G bands including Band 28, the 700MHz band Telstra and Optus use for rural coverage. A SIM from a reseller brand may need its APN entered, which is a single setting in the app.

Can you get WiFi off grid in Australia?

Yes, if the site has 4G coverage and the panels get regular direct sun. They charge the 30,000mAh battery by day and the router runs around the clock on that charge, with no power point and no broadband line. A long run of heavy cloud can run the battery down, so a week of southerly weather is the test.

How much data will the cameras use?

That depends on the cameras, not the router. A camera that streams around the clock uploads far more than one that sends motion clips, and every camera on the WiFi draws on the same plan. Uploads run at up to 50Mbps on Cat4, so pick a plan with room for video.

Is it legal to use a 4G router for security cameras in Australia?

Yes, the router is a network device, and nothing restricts running one on your own SIM. The rules apply to the cameras it connects: aim them at property you own or manage, and never record a private conversation you are not part of. Data travels on your own SIM plan under the terms of that plan. This is general information, not legal advice.

The SIM card and the USB-C power adapter and cable. The router runs on the mobile network like a phone, so fit a Nano SIM with a data plan from any Australian SIM provider; the solar panels do the charging.
