Description

A site network usually stops at the house or the office, while the cameras, gates and sheds that need it sit hundreds of metres out. Trenching a cable and running power out to each point can cost more than the cameras themselves.

This long range WiFi extender picks up the network you already have and relays it up to 300m across open ground, running on two solar panels totalling 30W and a 30,000mAh battery, so the mounting point needs no power at all. Link up to 10 units in a row to carry the network 2.5 to 3km, with the speed dropping at each hop. It has no SIM slot and no Ethernet port: it extends an existing WiFi network, and cameras and phones join it over WiFi.

Features

  • Link up to 10 units, 2.5 to 3km: Each extender relays the one before it, so a chain of solar units reaches a far gate, a bore or a back shed with no cable laid anywhere. Speed falls with each extra unit, and every extra unit is bought separately.
  • Up to 300m per unit: Rated across open ground in clear line of sight. Sheds, hills and stands of trees between two units shorten that distance, so give each one a clear view of the last.
  • Two solar panels, 30W combined: 15W each, charging the battery through the day, so no relay point needs a power point, a generator or a trench back to the switchboard.
  • 2.4GHz only, 802.11 b/g/n: It joins and rebroadcasts the 2.4GHz network, the band outdoor WiFi cameras run on. Keep that band switched on at your router, as the extender does not use 5GHz.
  • Four swivelling antennas: All four stand upright while the two panels tilt towards the sun on the same bracket.
  • 30,000mAh battery inside: Stores the day of solar charge to keep the relay running through the night when the panels get regular sun, with a battery percentage display on the unit.
  • WISP repeater, no Ethernet port: It joins the upstream network wirelessly and broadcasts its own. There is no network socket, so cameras and other devices connect over WiFi only.
  • Browser setup, no app to install: Join the extender WiFi on a phone and scan the QR code on its back, and the settings page opens in the browser, where you pick the network to relay.
  • Device list and access controls: The settings page lists every connected device, blocks one you do not recognise, turns the WiFi off on a timer and schedules automatic restarts.
  • A charge light for each panel: A separate light for each panel input sits beside the battery display, so you can check at the unit that both panels are charging.
  • Waterproof, with a covered switch: The power switch, reset button and USB-C input sit under a rubber cover, and the two panel cables plug in outside it.
  • USB-C 9V/1A backup charging: Charge it on the bench before it goes up, or top it up after a long run of cloud. The charger and cable are not included.
  • Swivel wall bracket and fixings: Fixes to a wall or a timber post 2 to 6m up, with wood screws, wall plugs and two machine screws in the box.

Applications

Cameras on a building site fence

The site office has the internet connection, but the compound fence and the materials laydown sit 250m away across open ground. One extender on a post within sight of the office relays the WiFi to the fence cameras, and it moves with the job when the site does.

A gate camera 1.2km from the house

A farm has WiFi at the homestead and needs a camera on the front gate at the end of a 1.2km track. Five units on timber poles 2 to 6m up, the first within reach of the house WiFi and the rest spaced 250m apart across open paddock, carry the network out to the gate. Because every hop shares the bandwidth, a gate camera that sends motion clips suits the far end better than one streaming all day.

How it Works

  1. Set it up on the ground: Give it 4 hours of direct sun or a 9V/1A USB-C charge, switch it on and join its WiFi on a phone. Scan the QR code on the back, choose the network to relay and enter its password, then give the extender its own network name and password on the settings page.
  2. Mount it within sight of the source: Fix the bracket 2 to 6m up where it picks up the router WiFi or has a clear view of the previous unit, with the panels facing north at about 40 degrees.
  3. Add the next unit: Repeat with each extra extender, choosing the previous unit as the network to relay, and give every unit a name you will recognise on the settings page, such as Gate-2.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can a WiFi extender reach?

The first unit sits within reach of your router WiFi. From there, each unit relays the network up to 300m to the next, across open ground in clear line of sight. Sheds, hills and trees shorten that. Up to 10 linked units cover 2.5 to 3km.

Can you daisy chain WiFi extenders?

Yes. Each unit relays the network of the one before it, up to 10 in a row. Set up every new unit by choosing the previous extender as the network to relay on its browser settings page. Each extra unit is bought on its own, and every hop shares the speed available.

How much does a WiFi extender reduce speed?

Each hop costs speed, because the unit receives the traffic and sends it again over the air. The far end of a long chain therefore runs slower than the first unit. Cameras that send motion clips cope with that better than cameras streaming around the clock.

Can I connect an NVR or a wired camera by cable?

No. The extender has no Ethernet socket, so it serves WiFi devices only: WiFi cameras, phones, laptops and tablets. A recorder or a camera that needs a network cable needs a wired link instead. WiFi cameras that record to a memory card or to the cloud connect to it.

Does it need internet at the far end?

No. It needs an existing WiFi network with internet within reach of the first unit, such as the router at the house or the site office. It has no SIM slot and creates no internet of its own. On a site with no internet at all, a solar 4G router such as the VIM-4GSOLR5 makes the WiFi from one SIM instead.

Will it keep running through an Australian winter?

With regular direct sun, yes. The two panels charge the 30,000mAh battery by day and the battery carries the relay overnight. Face the panels north at about 40 degrees, clear of shade, so they still catch the low winter sun. A long run of heavy cloud can run the battery down, and the USB-C input tops it up when that happens.

Is it legal to use a WiFi extender for security cameras in Australia?

Yes, an extender like this only carries your own network further and stores no video or audio. The rules apply to the cameras it connects: aim them at property you own or manage, and never record a private conversation you are not part of. This is general information, not legal advice.
