Description

The VIM-PENCAML is a working pen with a Full HD camera behind a sliding cover, made for the situation where an account of what happened is disputed and a recording made at the time is not.

It records 1920 x 1080 video with audio onto your own microSD card, up to 32GB, so the footage stays on a card in your hand rather than in anyone's cloud. One button starts and stops it, the cover slides shut over the lens when you are done, and a charge gives 55 to 60 minutes. 15 cm long, 1.4 cm across, 40 g. Before you rely on it, read the FAQ on what Australian law allows and what a school or workplace can require on top of that.

Features

A sliding cover over the lens: The cover closes when you are not recording, which protects the optics in a pocket or a bag and means the lens is not sitting open all day.
Full HD with audio: Records 1920 x 1080 video with sound, so what was said is captured alongside what happened.
One button, nothing to learn: A single control starts and stops recording. There is no menu, no app and no setup, which matters when you have one hand and a few seconds.
Photo mode as well: Switch to stills when a single image is all you need.
Your own microSD card: Takes a microSD card up to 32GB, which is not included. Files stay on the card, on your desk, rather than in anyone's cloud.
Pocket sized: 15 cm long, 1.4 cm across and 40 g, with 55 to 60 minutes of recording from a charge over USB.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

When nobody believes the account

Repeated incidents are hard to describe after the fact, and a description is easy to dispute. A recording made at the time, with audio, is a different kind of thing to put in front of a school, an employer or a parent. Read the FAQ below first: it sets out what Australian law allows and what a school can require on top of that.

Meetings you are part of

A pen on the table recording a conversation you are in, so you can take part properly instead of trying to write everything down. 55 to 60 minutes covers most meetings, and the files stay on your own card.

Documenting on the move

Site visits, deliveries and callouts where an account of what happened is worth having. At 40 g it carries like a pen, and it writes like one too, so there is nothing to explain about why it is there.

How it Works

Fit a card and charge: Insert a microSD card up to 32GB, which is not supplied, and charge the built in lithium ion cell over the USB cable.
Slide the cover and press: Open the lens cover, then one press starts 1080p video with audio. Press again to stop, or switch to photo mode for a still.
Copy the files off: On Windows or Linux, plug the pen in over USB and it mounts as a drive. On a Mac, take the microSD card out and read it in a card reader instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record on one charge?

55 to 60 minutes of video with audio. It charges over USB, so a laptop or a phone charger will refill it.

Is a memory card included?

No. It takes a microSD card up to 32GB and you supply it. Format the card in the pen before first use.

What does the lens cover actually do?

It slides over the lens when you are not recording. The practical benefit is that the optics stay clean and unscratched in a pocket or a bag, which is where a pen spends most of its life.

Does it work with a Mac?

Yes, with one extra step. On Windows and Linux it mounts as a drive over USB. On macOS, take the microSD card out of the pen and read it in a card reader instead.

Can a student record bullying at school?

Recording what happens to you in a public place is generally lawful, and a school also sets its own rules about devices on its grounds. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory: recording a conversation you are part of is allowed in some states and restricted in others, and filming where people expect privacy, such as changing rooms and bathrooms, is generally not allowed. If the aim is to get something taken seriously, tell the school what you intend to do first. This is general information, not legal advice.

What am I allowed to record generally?

Public places, and spaces you own or control. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory: recording a conversation you are part of is allowed in some states and restricted in others, and recording a private conversation you are not part of is generally not allowed. Workplaces, schools and venues can set stricter rules of their own. This is general information, not legal advice.
