Description

The VIM-P01 is a working pen with a Full HD camera and a 12 megapixel stills sensor, and one specification that separates it from the rest of the range: an audio only mode that runs for two hours where video and audio together run for eighty minutes.

It records 1920 x 1080 with audio to a microSD card up to 128GB, with loop recording so a long session does not stop when the card fills. One touch starts it. On Windows or Linux it mounts over USB, and a microSD card reader is in the box for reading the card on a Mac. 14 cm long, 1.25 cm across, 40 g in black.

Features

Audio only mode runs far longer: Up to 2 hours of continuous audio recording, against up to 80 minutes when video and audio run together. If what you need is the conversation rather than the picture, that is the mode to use.
Full HD video with 12MP stills: Records 1920 x 1080 video, and a 12 megapixel sensor takes photographs sharp enough to read a document or a label back afterwards.
Loop recording: When the card fills, the oldest files are overwritten and recording continues, so a long session does not stop because storage ran out.
microSD up to 128GB: Storage is on a card rather than fixed, so capacity is yours to choose and archiving is a card swap. A card reader is included in the box.
One touch, no setup: A single press starts and stops recording. There is no menu to work through and no app to open first.
Slim and light: 14 cm long, 1.25 cm across and 40 g in black, so it carries and clips like any other pen.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Meetings and negotiations

A record of a discussion you were part of, made at the time. Video with audio runs up to 80 minutes, and if the session will go longer than that, audio only mode stretches to two hours on the same charge.

Lectures and study

Recording a lecture so you can listen properly rather than transcribe. Loop recording means the pen keeps going when the card fills, and a 128GB card holds a semester of sessions before anything needs clearing.

Documenting an incident

Where something happened and the accounts of it differ, a contemporaneous recording with audio is a different kind of evidence from a description written later. The FAQ below sets out what Australian law allows before you rely on it.

How it Works

Charge and fit a card: Charge the built in lithium ion cell over the USB cable, and insert a microSD card up to 128GB. The card is not included, but a card reader is.
Press once to record: One touch starts Full HD video with audio, or audio only if that is the mode you want. Loop recording overwrites the oldest files rather than stopping when the card is full.
Copy the files off: On Windows or Linux, connect the pen over USB. On a Mac, take the microSD card out and read it with the supplied card reader.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it record on one charge?

Up to 80 minutes with video and audio running together, or up to 2 hours in audio only mode. The two figures are on the specification list and it is worth choosing the mode to match the length of the session.

What size card does it take?

microSD up to 128GB, and the card is not included. A card reader is in the box, which is how you get files off on a Mac.

What does loop recording do?

When the card is full it overwrites the oldest files instead of stopping. That keeps a long session running, but it also means anything you want to keep should be copied off before the card wraps around.

Does it work with a Mac?

Yes, with one extra step. On Windows and Linux the pen mounts over USB. On macOS, take the microSD card out and use the supplied card reader instead.

How good are the photos?

The stills sensor is 12 megapixel, which is a good deal more detail than the 1080p video frame carries. If what you need is a readable document, a label or a registration, use photo mode rather than pulling a frame out of the video.

What am I allowed to record in Australia?

Owning and wearing a camera like this is lawful in Australia, and so is filming in public places and on property you own or control. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory, and filming people where they expect privacy, such as a bathroom or bedroom, or recording a private conversation you are not part of, is generally not allowed. This is general information, not legal advice.
