Description

The Securitylab VIM-TINYLCD is a compact digital voice recorder built for long sessions where you set it running and come back to a complete record. A high sensitivity microphone rated to about 10 metres captures mono audio at 192 kb/s, and intelligent noise reduction helps hold speech together in busier rooms.

Voice activation starts capture when sound is detected and pauses through silence, which stretches a charge from around 24 hours of continuous recording to roughly 40 hours in voice activated mode. Scheduled recording lets you set start times in advance so a meeting already in the diary is covered without you touching the unit. Recordings sit on 8 GB of built in memory, play back on the spot through the supplied earphones, and copy to a computer over USB 2.0 at up to 7 Mb/s. The solid metal case measures 56 x 23 x 7 mm and weighs 15 g.

Features

Voice activation (VAS): Recording starts when sound is detected and pauses through silence, which saves both battery and storage across a long session.
Scheduled recording: Set start times in advance so the recorder begins on its own for a meeting you already have in the diary.
Long sessions on one charge: Up to 24 hours of continuous recording, or around 40 hours with voice activation enabled.
Clear speech capture: A high sensitivity microphone rated to about 10 metres, backed by intelligent noise reduction for busier rooms.
8 GB of built in memory: Holds a long run of recordings before anything needs to come off, with no card to buy.
Pocketable metal body: 56 x 23 x 7 mm and 15 g in a solid metal case, so it travels in a pocket or a laptop bag without a case of its own.
Review without a computer: Play back through the supplied earphones on the spot, then copy files over USB 2.0 at up to 7 Mb/s when you are ready to archive.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

Meetings and briefings you are in

Set the recorder running at the start of a project meeting or a site briefing and you have a complete record of what was agreed rather than a page of half finished notes. Scheduled recording covers a standing weekly meeting without anyone having to remember to press anything, and 24 hours of battery means a long day of sessions runs off a single charge.

Interviews and research

Journalists, researchers and investigators use a recorder like this to capture interviews they are conducting, with the agreement of the person being interviewed. Voice activation trims the silence between questions so a day of back to back interviews fits comfortably inside the 8 GB of built in memory, and the files come off over USB when the day is done.

Dictation and field notes

Inspectors, tradespeople and students use the recorder to talk through findings as they go, then play the file back through the supplied earphones before writing anything up. At 15 g it goes in a shirt pocket, and intelligent noise reduction keeps speech usable on a noisy site.

How it Works

Charge the recorder over USB, then use the controls on the unit to choose continuous recording, voice activation, or a scheduled start time.
Start the session. In voice activated mode it captures sound within about 10 metres and pauses through silence, which takes a charge from around 24 hours of continuous recording to roughly 40 hours.
Listen back through the supplied earphones, or connect the recorder to a computer over USB 2.0 at up to 7 Mb/s and copy the files off the 8 GB of built in memory.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the voice activation work?

When VAS is enabled the recorder starts capturing when it detects sound and pauses during silence. That extends a charge from about 24 hours of continuous recording to roughly 40 hours, and it keeps empty silence out of your files.

Can I set it to record at a specific time?

Yes. Scheduled recording lets you configure start times so the unit begins on its own at the times you have set, with no button press needed on the day.

How far away can the microphone pick up speech?

The built in microphone has an operating distance of about 10 metres, which covers a typical meeting room. Real world range depends on room acoustics and background noise.

What audio quality does it record at?

Recordings are mono at 192 kb/s across a 100 to 10000 Hz band. That is aimed at speech rather than music, and it keeps file sizes sensible on long sessions.

How do I review and transfer recordings?

Plug the supplied earphones in for a quick check on the device, or connect over USB 2.0 at up to 7 Mb/s to copy files to a computer.

Is it legal to record audio in Australia?

Recording your own dictation, a meeting where everyone knows it is recording, or sound in your own empty home, vehicle or site is lawful. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory: recording a conversation you are part of is allowed in some states and restricted in others, and recording a private conversation you are not part of is generally not allowed. This is general information, not legal advice.
