Hidden cameras offer a discreet alternative for renters who cannot install traditional security cameras. Many users protect their tools in sheds or keep an eye on their homes while away from these devices. Once considered spy gear, covert cameras have now become more mainstream.

Spy cameras are an excellent security addition, allowing you to monitor areas remotely. Whether you're looking to catch thieves, monitor a cheating spouse, implement anti-vandal measures, keep an eye on your nanny, ensure business surveillance, or even address issues like bullying, hidden cameras provide versatile solutions.

Wide Angle Lens

Most hidden cameras have a lens width within the standard range of 60 to 110 degrees. When making a selection, it's important to remember that images will exhibit a slight curvature at approximately 90 degrees, which is typical. This slight distortion is usually not an issue, but lenses with a width exceeding 95 degrees might display more prominent curvature.

Audio

Hidden cameras typically have a built-in microphone to record audio along with video. However, while hidden cameras can capture audio, they may not perform as well as dedicated voice recorders in terms of audio quality. Using a separate voice recorder is recommended for clear audio recording.

Motion Detection

Most concealed cameras offer multiple recording modes, including Motion Detection. Enabling this feature allows the device to record only when there is movement. While the camera is stationary and recording the room, motion detection helps save storage space.

Remote View

If you want a product with remote viewing capability, seek out covert cameras with integrated WIFI. This will enable you to use the designated app to view from any location in the world. Remember that all Hidden Cameras with WIFI require a 2.4Ghz WIFI connection. 2.4Ghz is the most commonly used frequency, so if you encounter difficulty connecting, please verify that your WIFI is 2.4Ghz. Generally, spy cameras are unable to connect to 5Ghz WIFI.

Hidden Cams Video Resolution

The resolution of a hidden camera is typically 1080p (2MP), 2 K (4Mp), or 4K (8MP). Connect the camera to your computer using the provided USB cable to view the video files. If you experience any playback issues, consider using VLC Player. If the camera is equipped with Wi-Fi, you can usually log in through the app to view and playback the footage.

Push Notifications

Certain hidden cameras support push notifications. When the camera detects movement, it will notify you through the app. It's important to note that some phones and telecom companies don't handle push notifications well. This means push notifications are only sometimes 100% reliable but still useful.

Night Vision

Remember that while many spy cameras have night vision, it's essential to know that night vision on a hidden camera might be better than on a regular CCTV camera. The night vision range for a hidden camera is usually between 1-10 meters, depending on the model. It can also be dim because the tiny lens doesn't let in much light. Another problem is that the infrared lights are hidden behind a cover and need to be fixed as well as they should. Night vision also makes hidden cameras easier to spot, so that's something to consider.

Memory/Storage

Spy cameras usually use a micro SD card or have internal memory. Each product using a micro SD card has its maximum size limit, so it's important to check that. Spy cameras can support up to a 256GB micro SD card. Most hidden cameras require a Class 10 micro SD card formatted to FAT32 or ExFAT. Larger cards come formatted to other formats, so you may need to change it to FAT32 if you experience any issues. Some units allow you to format the card inside the device, while others require you to do it on a PC.

Two-Way Audio

Some Hidden Cams have two-way talk, allowing remote listening and speaking. Note that the unit's size and speaker may limit this feature's performance.

WIFI or Non Wireless

Most hidden cameras, labelled as WIFI, offer motion detection, remote viewing, and sound and video recording. For a camera without remote capabilities and undetectable by standard bug detection equipment, select a non-WIFI camera.

Power Requirements

Most hidden cams use USB 5V power, so you can power them using standard phone chargers, your PC, or a USB power bank. Many hidden cams come with a built-in rechargeable battery, allowing you to use cameras without the main power. As an additional power option, you can use  USB powerbank are great for extended periods when you don't have access to power. Additionally, most units can be permanently powered, so it's worth checking the specifications for this feature.
