Description

The name of this one needs unpacking. The VIM-V89WIFI has a backup battery good for about four hours, not a long life cell. The long battery is the one you supply: a 10,000mAh pack runs it for several days and a 20,000mAh pack for about a week.

It is a two part module. A pinhole lens on a 2m lead does the looking and a small WiFi recorder does the rest, joining your own router for live view and playback on a phone or a Windows PC. Recording is 1920 x 1080p through a Sony IMX323 to a microSD card up to 512GB, which is around fifteen days of footage.

Features

Two part module: A pinhole lens on a 2m lead and a separate 53.5 x 45 x 18.5mm WiFi recorder, so each goes where it fits.
Full HD with a Sony sensor: 1920 x 1080p recorded through a Sony IMX323 as AVI.
512GB card support: About fifteen days of recording on a single card before anything needs clearing.
Runs on a power bank: Several days from 10,000mAh, about a week from 20,000mAh, which is what the long battery in the name refers to.
Live view and playback: Joins your own router, then streams to Android, iOS or a Windows 8 or 10 PC.
Motion alerts: Movement starts a recording and pushes a notification to your phone.

Applications

Real-World Scenarios

A Property of Yours With No Power Point

This is the case it is built for. A power bank on the floor and a lens through a panel covers a holiday house, a lockup or a site shed for a week.

Your Own Garage or Carport

Mains power and continuous recording, with the lens on its lead going wherever the view is rather than wherever the bracket fits.

A Shop or Storeroom You Run

A 512GB card means a fortnight of continuous footage before anything is overwritten. Put a notice up so staff and customers know the area is recorded.

Your Own Home While You Are Away

Live view over your own router is the reason to choose a WiFi model rather than a standalone recorder.

How it Works

Set it up: connect the pinhole lens to the WiFi recorder, fit a microSD card up to 512GB and power it from the adapter or a power bank.
Set the mode: join the recorder to your own 2.4GHz WiFi with the app and set continuous or motion triggered recording.
Watch or review: watch live or review clips in the app, or read the card on a computer.

Specifications

Power: 5V, 2A maximum. Use the adapter supplied, or a standard 5V USB charger or power bank rated 2A or less. Do not use fast chargers (USB-C PD, Quick Charge, Super Fast Charging) or high-output power banks: they can damage the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it actually run on its own battery?

About four hours. The internal cell is a backup, not the headline. The long runtimes in the specification are what you get from an external power bank: several days at 10,000mAh and about a week at 20,000mAh.

How much will a 512GB card hold?

Around fifteen days of recording at typical settings, which is longer than any of the power options will keep it running, so the card is rarely the limiting factor.

Can I watch it from another address?

Yes. The recorder joins your own router, so the app gives you live view and playback from anywhere you have data.

What card capacity is supported?

The specification says microSD up to 512GB. The older product data sheet says 256GB, so if you intend to fit a 512GB card, ask us to confirm before you order.

Can I record with this legally in Australia?

Using a camera like this to protect your own home, business, property and family is lawful in Australia. Surveillance devices laws differ by state and territory, and filming people where they expect privacy, such as a bathroom or bedroom, or recording a private conversation you are not part of, is generally not allowed. If carers, cleaners, staff or guests use the space, tell them a camera is there. This is general information, not legal advice.
